Fascia board repair

Fascia is the long board along the roof edge. It carries the gutter and closes the eaves to birds and rain, and when it rots, the gutter and the deck edge go with it.

Big Easy Roofing Company repairs and replaces fascia on homes across New Orleans, in wood, PVC, aluminum wrap and composite. Humid air, overflowing gutters and old paint rot it faster here than almost anywhere.

Fascia work usually goes hand in hand with the gutter hanging on it, so a gutter repair is priced alongside when it is needed.

Rot Cut Out, Not Covered

Soft wood is removed, never wrapped in metal and left to keep rotting.

Rafter Ends Checked

Behind a rotten board, the rafter tails often need work too.

Sealed Against Pests

New board closes the gaps squirrels, birds and rain use to get into the eaves.

Signs of fascia damage

Six Signs Your Fascia
Needs Attention

Fascia damage is easy to spot once you know where to look. Stand in the yard and check the roof edge for these.

Weathered roof timbers rotting, with lichen growing on the wood

Soft or Rotting Wood

Press a screwdriver into the board. If it sinks in, water has been getting behind the gutter for a while.

Underside of a roof overhang with a downspout at the corner

A Gutter Pulling Away

Hangers only hold if the wood does. A gutter tilting off the edge usually means rotten fascia behind it.

Rain pouring over the edge of a tiled roof

Stains Along the Roof Edge

Dark streaks on the board show where water runs behind the gutter or past a missing drip edge.

Perforated vent strip running along a timber soffit

Gaps Where Animals Get In

Squirrels, birds and wasps use gaps where fascia meets soffit. Droppings or nesting are the clue.

Weathered, warped horizontal boards on the side of a house

Warped or Split Boards

Wood that has cupped, split or pulled off its nails has taken on water and will keep moving.

Weathered gable of a house with peeling paint and rust stains

Paint That Will Not Stay On

Paint that peels again a year after painting means moisture is coming through the wood from behind.

Four Fascia Materials
and Where Each Fits

The right board depends on the house, the finish you want, and how much upkeep you will do.

Board 01

Wood

Traditional and paintable, and right on historic houses. It needs sealing on every face and paint every few years in this climate.

Board 02

PVC

Cellular PVC boards look like painted wood and do not rot. They cost more and move with heat, so joints need allowance.

Board 03

Aluminum Wrap

Metal bent over a wood board. Low upkeep, but only over wood that is dry and solid, never over rot.

Composite

Wood fiber and resin boards that resist rot and insects and take paint well.

Wrapping Rot Is Not a Repair

Metal bent over a rotten board hides the problem and traps the water. We cut out the rot first, every time.

Fascia repair cost

What Decides the Cost
of Fascia Repair

Fascia is priced by the length replaced and by what turns up behind it. These five things move the number.

Linear Feet Replaced

One corner or the whole roof edge. Most of the price follows the length.

Board Material

Wood, PVC, aluminum wrap or composite, each at a different cost per foot.

Rafter Tails Behind It

Soft rafter ends are repaired before new board can go on.

Height and Access

Second-story eaves and tight corners take more setup.

The Gutter on It

Taking down, rehanging or replacing the gutter is priced on its own line.

Board by board, the written price shows where the money goes. Rather describe it in writing? Use our contact page.

Fascia Board Questions

Seeing droppings or wasps at the eaves? Mention it when you call, because it tells us where to look first.

Talk to a roofer504-229-3955

It closes the roof edge, supports the gutter, and keeps rain and animals out of the eaves. It also carries the drip edge that sends water into the gutter.

A short soft spot can be cut out and a new piece scarfed in. If the rot runs along the board, the whole length is replaced.

Usually water getting behind it: an overflowing gutter, a missing drip edge, or paint that seals the front but not the back.

Over sound, dry wood, yes. Over rot it hides the damage and traps moisture, which is why we cut the rot out first.

Only if they need it. Most gutters come down, wait, and go back up on the new board. If one is past saving, it is priced separately.

No. Fascia is the upright board at the roof edge, and soffit is the underside of the overhang. They meet at the corner and often fail together. See the soffit services page.
